Confidence comes in three colors
It is said that when you win more games you will develop more confidence. But how do you win more games if you don’t have
confidence? Confidence is tied into ones concentration ability. If you are confident you can win you will be more focused on the shot at
hand and less likely to be distracted by fear. In the early going I learned to play without confidence. I was forced to perform anyways
and since I did not have confidence I simply shot the shots I faced to the best of my ability. I learned to “See the shot, know the stroke
and shoot the shot”. In time, I began to develop confidence.
There are three kinds of confidence.
1. False Confidence. This is the player who brags himself up before a match or goes to great extent to put other players
down. He is trying to give himself strength where there is none. If I run into a player who is loaded with false confidence I don’t respond
to him/her. I act like I don’t even know he is there. When you respond to this type of player you feed into his false confidence and gives
the braggart more strength. A young student of mine talked in colorful tones on what he was going to do to his opponents in the Vegas
Nationals. I tried to caution him but he would have none of it and talked on and on in a colorful way about the destruction of all the
players he would face. He went two and out. When I booked my flight to Moscow Russia I expressed this form of confidence. I tried to
pump myself up because I knew I would be on Russian TV teaching The Monk 101. This false confidence made me feel empty and lost.
So I went to the third kind of confidence and told myself that they would not want me over there if I did not have something valuable to
teach.
2. The Moment Confidence. This guy gains his confidence when things are going well at the moment. If he is playing
well, he is confident. When I play I have been known to be a risk taker. When I pull off a spectacular shot I am filled with this momentary
confidence and can finish strong. Sometimes I will chose to take a chance and go for the tough shot just to shoot myself full of
confidence. If I am able to make the shot, I seem to believe in myself to a greater extent and can play at a high level for the rest of the
game. Some players call this “shaking up the stroke”. If my opponent plays a safe and leaves me a tough bank shot, I usually take the
shot just to build my confidence. After years of playing this game I find that even this momentary confidence has its negatives. We come
to rely upon it and when it’s gone, we are lost. If you are the type of player who sometimes turns in a dreadful performance it could be
that you have come to rely upon this momentary confidence.
3. Real Confidence. Real confidence comes when you have a perspective of yourself as goodness. If you ask me how I am
playing, I am free to respond with “If I perform poorly in a match, it does not matter because I am connected to my own goodness.” To
be honest I may not use those words but those are my feeling. This is why The Masters of Art in Pocket Billiards program is so
effective. The masters are a group of players who have joined my on line training program. Normally it takes about two years to
complete the study. We turn in our numbers four times during each level. If my numbers are at a consistent high level, it doesn't matter
how I perform in a given match. If I play poorly, it is just one of those days. If I play great, I am humble because I know that this to will
change. I asked Allen Hopkins “what do you do when you go into a slump?” He answered, “I get more money”. He has real confidence.
Overall, I am confident and my confidence comes from my skill level, knowing where I am at in this game. I could be in a match and not
show that skill level and my opponent gets good rolls while I make a few mistakes. But that does not reflect my over all confidence
because I know what my skill level is. All the players in the Masters program know exactly what their skill level is. Let's take our rightful
place in the winner's circle. You don't have to make every shot to find your confidence. You are connected to your own goodness.
